The aim of this WP is to create an overarching understanding of the (transient) climate response to emission scenarios able to incorporate both the classical concept of equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) and the occurrence of critical transitions. Such a point of view will allow us to address a much larger class of questions regarding the climate response to forcings.

The concrete objectives of this WP are:

  1. To extend the concept of climate sensitivity in order to systematically allow for state-dependent feedbacks, a large set of climatic observables, and multiple spatial and temporal scales.
  2. To incorporate the effect of TPs in defining climate sensitivity.
The WP is divided into two tasks organised along these two objectives, each formed of two subtasks and leading to specific outputs and related deliverables. For each subtask we provide specific reference to modelling exercises that will go hand in hand with the more theoretical work.
